Ever since the US government released the dietary guidelines for people, they have been faced with criticism. In the guidelines it has been suggested to the people that eating less meat is better for the environment. Now, According to a report, the Congressional Republicans are looking ahead to change the earlier dietary guidelines and also wants to urge the Americans, to consider those who are environmental friendly, to have plant-based diet instead of animal-based. This move has led to a series of debates suggesting that the Obama administration has gone too far by telling the Americans what to eat and what not to. As a result of this, the meat industry is also angry as they fear that the sales of meat and related products might suffer after this.

Well, it’s certainly not the first time that dietary guidelines have been opposed. They come out every five years for the purpose of spreading awareness about the food habits among the people. These are to be followed by school lunches, food packaging labels and other similar sectors. The present guidelines are only in the proposed format right now and the final version is expected to be released at the end of 2015 by the department of Agriculture and Health and Human services. It was also suggested by the advisory committee that the sugary beverages and snacks should be taxed so that people will either reduce their consumption or stop it. This step can be related to the present health situations in the US as many people are obese and overweight.

The Democratic Congresswoman, Rosa DeLauro, in an interview said that these recommendations were ideologically based. She also said that they have to go with science and they keep saying they want to go with science but then when science dictates something they don’t agree with, they say, Oh well, we don’t like that science.

Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reveals livestock is responsible for about 15 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The environmentalists also suggested that following a diet that is based on plant foods could make the environment much less damaged.
